  1. What's the latest count?

    About 12 million addresses

hold between 0.01 and 1 Bitcoin.

The retail-sized part of the ownership ladder, below a whole coin.

  2. But addresses aren't people.

An address is a slot on the blockchain, not a person or a wallet. One person can control thousands of addresses; a single exchange holds millions of customers' coins in just a few. Coins that are lost forever still count here too. So read this as a count of addresses, never a headcount of people.

  3. How much Bitcoin is that, and what share of the whole?

    12 million
addresses hold between 0.01 and 1 Bitcoin

  4. Is this group growing or shrinking?

The number of addresses that hold between 0.01 and 1 Bitcoin has held roughly steady over the last couple of years. The chart at the top tracks it across the whole history. It is one lens on whether this slice of the ownership ladder is filling up or thinning out.

  5. What does this mean for you?

Use this as a map of smaller balances on the blockchain, not a count of people. If both the address count and Bitcoin held rise, the group is getting broader and heavier. When they split, addresses crossing the 0.01 or 1 BTC boundaries may explain more of the move.

Understanding Addresses With a Balance Between 0.01 and 1 BTC

This page counts only addresses holding at least 0.01 Bitcoin but less than 1 Bitcoin. It combines the two smaller balance bands into one non-overlapping retail-sized group, then tracks both the address count and the Bitcoin held over time.

An address is not a person. One person can control many addresses, exchanges can hold customers' coins in a few, and lost balances still count. Read this as a count of addresses in this balance range, never a headcount of owners.

When this count changes, some addresses may be gaining or spending coins, while others may simply cross one of the group's boundaries. The chart describes where balances sit; it does not identify the people behind them.
