Understanding Bitcoin's Price
Bitcoin trades every second of every day across many exchanges at once. The price you see is the most recent trade on the busiest venues. Because each venue has its own buyers and sellers, prices can sit a few dollars apart at any given moment, so the number here blends the major venues rather than leaning on a single one.
The chart is made of candles. Each candle covers one slice of time and shows four prices: where it opened, the highest it traded, the lowest it traded, and where it closed. A candle that closed above where it opened is drawn one color, and one that closed below is drawn the other. The thick body is the open-to-close range, and the thin wicks reach to the high and the low.
The chart holds Bitcoin's whole history. The range buttons zoom from the last month out to every year since 2011, and the log button switches between a plain scale and one where each step up is a multiple of the last, which keeps the cent-priced early years readable next to today. The faint tan line you can switch on is the 200-week average, a level price has returned to near the bottom of every past cycle.
