Understanding Bitcoin New Addresses
An address counts as new the first time it ever appears on the blockchain, whether it receives a payment or shows up inside a transaction. The count covers the past day as a rolling window, so it always reflects the most recent full day of activity.
A new address is not a new person. Modern wallets create a fresh address for almost every payment, including the change a wallet sends back to itself, so one active person can leave dozens of new addresses behind in a week. Read this as raw turnover on the blockchain, not as people signing up.
In Bitcoin's first two years, nearly every new address used an early payment format, called pay-to-public-key or P2PK, that can hide repeats of the same key. By 2013 that format had faded to fewer than one in four hundred new addresses, and today it has essentially disappeared. The earliest stretch of the chart can therefore undercount slightly; the rest counts exactly.
