TRANSACTION ACTIVITY

How busy is the Bitcoin network?

How many transactions Bitcoin handles each day, and how much dollar value moves through them.

Bitcoin transactions per day

6,474 daily readings since 2009

Confirmed transactions each day since 2009, the plainest measure of how busy Bitcoin is. The scale gives equal space to equal percentage changes. The daily line is jumpy: add a 7, 30 or 200-day average to see the trend.

Right now

Broadly active: plenty of transactions and plenty of dollar value moving, so Bitcoin is busy on both fronts.

The reading sets the last 30 days against the last four years. On 29 Sep 2026, the latest full day, Bitcoin confirmed 753,902 transactions.

Counts and dollar value

Averaged over the past 30 days and set against the last four years, transactions are running above their usual level, the dollar value moving is above normal, and each transaction is about its usual size. A busy network, with transfers their usual size.

When the transactions line climbs while the dollar line stays flat, the two are telling different stories.

Against the last four years

On 29 Sep 2026, the number of transactions ranked in the 96th percentile of the last four years, and the dollar value moving in the 100th.

What the chain is used for

Not everything written to Bitcoin is a payment. Some of it is just data parked in a slot that can hold no coin and can never be spent from. On 29 Sep 2026 that was 473,547 of 1,721,459 pieces, or 27.5%.

most ever is 35.3% on 19 Jul 2026

The share was zero until 29 Mar 2013 and has climbed in bursts since, so a busy day is not always a day of busy payments.

For you

Both the number of transactions and the dollar value moving are running high. That is what a busy, well-used network looks like. It does not tell you which way the price goes, but heavy use on both fronts is a solid backdrop. Worth watching whether the pace holds.

Understanding
Transaction Activity

Where it stands today

Averaged over the past 30 days, Bitcoin is handling 704K transactions a day as of .

Why two questions on one page?

How busy is Bitcoin, and how much dollar value is moving through it? Those are different questions, and the answers do not always match. A day with millions of tiny transactions can move less value than a quiet day with a few large transfers.

Why do both numbers matter?

The number of transactions tells you how much the network is being used. The dollar value tells you how much is changing hands. The average transaction size is the bridge between them: when it is small, lots of little transfers are driving the count; when it is large, a few big moves are doing the work.

Is one reading the whole story?

No. Transaction counts can be pushed up by data written onto Bitcoin, and the dollar value swings with the price and counts coins sent back as change. That is why this page shows both numbers and the points below. Treat it as a starting point for questions, not a final answer.

Is the dollar value what truly changed hands?

No, it is gross. The dollar figure counts every Bitcoin that moved, including coins sent back to the sender as change, so it reads higher than the amount that truly changed hands. Watch the trend and how a day compares with the past, not the exact dollar total.

Why does the dollar value follow the price?

When Bitcoin's price rises, the same coins moving make a bigger dollar figure. A rising dollar value does not always mean more coins are on the move.

Does one transaction mean one person?

Not always. Exchanges often bundle many people's withdrawals into one transaction, so the count understates how many people are actually moving Bitcoin.

Why can the count stay flat while use grows?

More efficient ways of writing transactions let more payments fit into fewer transactions. A flat count does not always mean flat use.

Does Lightning show up here?

No. Payments over the Lightning Network, a payment network built on top of Bitcoin, never appear in the count on the blockchain. Bitcoin can be getting more use while this number stays flat or falls.

What are inscriptions and runes?

Ways of writing data, pictures or tokens onto Bitcoin itself. They can flood the network with transactions that are not ordinary payments, so the count can spike without more people using Bitcoin behind it. The busiest day in the record was 23 Apr 2024, with 932,093 transactions, in the days after a new way to create tokens on Bitcoin went live on 20 Apr 2024.
