What is on this page?

An exchange is where most people buy and sell Bitcoin, and almost everything you can measure about the market gets measured at one. This page has a card for each reading Maketo takes there, and the strip at the top opens any one exchange's own page.

What does each card open?

Each card opens a page of its own for one reading. The first two read the exchange wallets our tracing can follow: how many coins they hold, and which way coins are moving. Each of the others ranks every exchange that has its reading, from the most to the least, or for the gap between the best buy and sell prices from the tightest, and each row opens that exchange's own page for it. Not every exchange has every reading, so the rankings hold different numbers of exchanges.

Why do two cards count coins differently?

The first card counts the exchange wallets our tracing can follow, a record that goes back to 2013. The coins held card counts the addresses we know for each exchange, one exchange at a time. They are different counts and neither contains the other, so neither is the sum of the other.

Where do the market-wide numbers live?

Some questions are about the whole market rather than one exchange: all the trading in a day, all the orders near the price, all the open bets. Those have pages of their own, and the reading above quotes each one and links to it rather than copying it here.

Where do the numbers come from?

Nothing here is bought in. The chain readings come from our own tracing of the exchange wallets, and the market readings come from our own recording of what each exchange published, day by day. Where a reading is missing it is because we are not recording it yet, and the page says so rather than filling the gap with someone else's number.
