What do the three chart views show?

The dollar-price view follows each day’s closing price. Candles show where the day opened and closed, plus its high and low. Daily moves compare consecutive closes, so you can see the size of each day’s gain or loss.

What does market cap tell me?

It estimates the total value of the coins in circulation at market prices. It is not the amount of money people have paid into Bitcoin. It is recorded once a day on its own, so it can differ a little from the day’s close times the number of coins.

What does “in circulation” include?

The count includes every Bitcoin that has been created. It does not subtract coins that are lost, or coins an owner plans never to sell. The rest of the supply is the gap to Bitcoin’s 21 million limit.

Why can the three technical readings disagree?

Trend follows the broader direction. Momentum follows the pace of recent changes. The combined reading brings the two together with a check on trading volume. A strong trend can sit alongside weakening momentum, and none of these readings says what the price will do next.

Why can the price differ from place to place?

Bitcoin trades every second of every day on many exchanges at once, and each has its own buyers and sellers, so prices can sit a few dollars apart at any moment. Each day on this page runs from midnight to midnight UTC, and its close is that day’s last price.

How do I read a candle?

Each candle covers one day and shows four prices: where it opened, the highest it traded, the lowest it traded and where it closed. The thick body runs from the open to the close, and the thin wicks reach up to the high and down to the low. A candle that closed above its open is orange, and one that closed below it is blue.

How far back does the chart go?

To 17 Jul 2010, 5,918 days in all. The range buttons zoom from the last month out to the whole history, and you can drag across the chart to pick your own dates. The log scale gives each doubling the same height, which keeps the early prices, in cents, readable beside today’s. For the whole history at its widest zoom, see one candle per calendar year, from 2010 to the year still running.

Is today’s price high or low?

The price on its own tells you where Bitcoin is, not whether that is high or low. This page adds some of that: how far the price is from its record, what all the coins are worth, and what the technical readings say.
