01Moving is not selling. These figures count every coin that changed addresses, including coins someone shuffled between their own wallets and the change that comes back from a normal payment. A group is credited by the size it was at the moment its coins moved.

02Past day, not calendar day. Each reading is a rolling total of the 24 hours before it, not a count that starts again at midnight.

03An address is not a person. One holder can spread coins across many addresses, and an exchange can keep millions of customers’ coins in a few. Read every group as a set of addresses, never a headcount.

Quiet big groups are the market’s normal state: most large holdings sit still for months. The signal is change. When a big group’s line jumps well above its usual range, coins that normally sit still are on the move. So a jump tells you holders are acting, not which way the price will go.

The table is the quickest read. A group moving a much bigger share of the coins than it holds is busy for its size, whatever the price is doing. Right now that is the 1,000 to 10,000 BTC group, at 1.8 times its share.

What does the chart count?

Every coin that changes addresses is credited to the size of the holding it came from at that moment. Add those up for each size group and you get the Bitcoin each group moved over the past day. The chart shows that figure for every day since 2012, three groups at a time: the one you pick and the two nearest it in size.

What is spent volume?

Spent volume is the technical name for this figure: the total of the coins a group’s addresses sent. It is a gross figure, so it includes coins an owner moved between their own addresses and the change that comes back from a normal payment. One coin can also move several times in a day and is counted each time, which is how a single busy day can add up to more Bitcoin than exists.

Why does the table matter more than the totals?

Big groups move big numbers because they hold big numbers. The useful question is whether a group moves more or less than its weight. Dividing its share of the day’s moves by its share of the coins held answers it in one number: above 1.0 the group is busier than its size would suggest, below 1.0 it is quieter.

Why is moving not selling?

A move is any transfer, including coins sent between an owner’s own wallets and the change that comes back from an ordinary payment. Selling is one kind of move among many. How should you use it, and how not?

Read each line against its own usual range, not against the other lines. A group whose line jumps far above its usual level has coins on the move that normally sit still. That says holders are acting, not which way the price will go. A quiet reading is not a signal in itself: most large holdings sit still for months at a time.
