BITCOIN REALIZED PROFIT AND LOSS BY COIN AGE
Are the profits coming from old coins or new?
The dollars locked in when coins moved, split by how long those coins had sat still. Old coins cashing in tell a different story from new ones.
Coins aged 1 to 2 years: profit and losses locked in
The orange line is one age group's dollars cashed in above what those coins last cost; the blue line is the same group's dollars given up below it. The scale rises by powers of ten, so the quiet years and the loud ones share one picture, and a gap is a day with nothing on that side.

Both columns are dollar totals over the past day, each one a figure in its own right: a busy day locks in profit and gives up losses at once. The last column is the difference between them, which is why it carries its direction in words.
What changed
vs 30-day averageCoins aged 6 months to 1 year locked in 646% more than their 30-day average, $142.6M against $19.1M, over 30 days of readings.
who sat stillEvery one of the eleven groups locked in profit or took losses on . The last day a group had neither was : 10 years and up.
since a month agoSix of the eleven groups with a reading on both days are higher than on . Coins aged 6 months to 1 year changed most, from $14.4M to $142.6M.
Keep in mind
01Moving is not selling. These figures count every coin that changed addresses, including coins someone shuffled between their own wallets and the change that comes back from a normal payment. A coin is credited by how long it had sat still at the moment it moved.
02Past day, not calendar day. Each reading is a rolling total of the 24 hours before it, not a count that starts again at midnight.
03Profit against the last move. A coin counts as profit when it moves above the price it last moved at, and as a loss when it moves below. Neither says what the owner paid at an exchange, and a busy day does both at once.
04A gap is one side at zero. On a day a group locked in no profit its orange line has no point to draw, and the same goes for losses on the blue line. A day of losses and no profit is still coins moving, just below what they last cost.
For you
Who is cashing in matters as much as how much. Profit taken by coins bought last week is trading, the market's background noise. Profit taken by coins that sat for years is patient money choosing this price, and it is a different kind of day.
The split is the quickest read. Over the past day, coins a year and older locked in $351.6M of the $989.9M in profit, and the rest came from coins younger than that. Losses tell the other half: they cluster where coins were bought near the current price. This describes what moved, not advice.
Understanding
Bitcoin Realized Profit and Loss by Coin Age
Where it stands today
Of the eleven age groups, the most profit locked in over the past day was $401.2M, by coins aged 1 to 6 months as of .
What does the chart show?
Every time a coin moves above the price it last moved at, someone locks in a profit; below it, someone takes a loss. This page adds both up in dollars for eleven age groups, from coins that moved within the past day to coins that had sat for over ten years, and draws one group's two tapes at a time.
What is realized profit and loss?
Realized profit and loss is money that actually changed hands, as against paper gains on coins nobody has moved. A coin counts as profit when it moves above the price it last moved at and as a loss when it moves below, which says nothing about what its owner paid at an exchange.
Why are the two lines never added together?
They are two counts of the same day, not two ends of one scale. A group that locked in a hundred million and gave up a hundred million had a busy day, and a single net figure would print it as nothing happening. The table above keeps both columns and puts the difference in a third.
Does an old group always show profit?
At the old end, nearly: those coins last moved years ago at far lower prices. On this record the two oldest groups never took a loss, and coins five years and older took one on 80 of the 5,385 days. It stops being a rule lower down: coins aged 1 to 2 years took losses on 2,630 of those days, and a young group can carry the day's biggest profit. The record holds 5,385 days for each group, from 2012.
How should you read it, and how not?
Who cashes in matters as much as how much: profit taken by coins bought last week is trading, profit taken by coins that sat for years is patient money choosing this price. Moving is not the same as selling, so read these as honest ceilings rather than exact sales, and as a record of what moved rather than advice.
