Where it stands today

What is open interest?

Open interest is the total value of futures positions that are still open. It grows when new bets are opened and falls when they are closed or forced shut. It is not trading volume: volume counts what changed hands during the day, while open interest counts what is still standing at the end of it. A day of heavy trading that closes as many bets as it opens moves volume a long way and open interest hardly at all.

Why more than one line?

Contracts differ by what they settle in. Cash-settled contracts pay out in dollars, so a trader can take a position on the price without ever holding Bitcoin. Coin-settled contracts pay out in Bitcoin, so the collateral behind them moves with the price as well. Bitget no longer lists the other kind, so every bet counted here now settles in cash.

What does it tell you?

Read this against the same reading on other venues rather than on its own. Exchanges do not move together: money can pile into bets on one while it drains from another, and a market-wide total hides that completely. Each reading here is measured on Bitget and rolled into one figure per finished day.
