How deep the sleep goes
Of those, 3.14 million BTC have sat still for twelve years or more, and 2.18 million BTC for fifteen years or more. Each count holds the next, so the three piles nest rather than add up.
The fifteen-year pile holds coins that last moved within Bitcoin’s first three years, including the coins attributed to its creator.
Lost or sleeping?
Nobody can tell from the chain alone. A coin lost to a forgotten password looks exactly like a coin held on purpose.
Ten years without a move is the usual rule of thumb for “probably not coming back”. The deeper counts make that guess stronger, because the oldest coins date from when Bitcoin was nearly free and easy to lose.
The past year
More coins crossed the ten-year mark than woke up and moved, so the pile grew. In the daily record since 2019, it has grown over every one-year stretch.
Coins join this pile every day just by sitting still. They only leave it by moving.
What it means
Sleeping coins shrink the real supply. Whatever never moves cannot be sold, so the Bitcoin actually available to buy is smaller than the total.
A steadily growing pile is the market’s patience made visible. The thing to watch is the exception, old coins waking up in size.

What counts as lost or sleeping?
A coin is counted here once it has sat untouched for at least ten years. The chain records exactly when every coin last moved, so the count itself is precise. What it cannot record is why a coin has stayed still.
Why look past ten years?
The deeper counts sharpen the guess. Coins untouched for fifteen years or more date back to Bitcoin’s earliest years, when coins were nearly free, wallets were fragile and careless loss was common. That core is the strongest candidate for truly lost coins.
Why are the three lines never added up?
The three counts nest inside each other. Every fifteen-year coin is also a twelve-year coin and a ten-year coin, so the lines sit inside one another and are never added together. Each line begins when Bitcoin first became old enough for it: the ten-year line in 2019, the twelve-year line in 2021 and the fifteen-year line in 2024.
What happens when old coins wake up?
The pile only shrinks on a day when more of its coins move than new ones cross the ten-year mark. Its biggest one-day fall in the daily record came on 4 Jul 2025, when the ten-year count dropped by 79,758 BTC. See how much of each age moved.
