An order book is the queue of orders waiting at chosen prices. Depth is how much money is sitting in that queue near the current price, and it decides what a large order costs to fill: a deep book absorbs it with barely a move, a thin one lets the same order walk the price several percent before it is done.

Three distances are shown because they answer different questions. The half-percent band is the tightest and the first to empty when the market gets nervous, so it moves before anything else does. The one and two-percent bands hold the money that a genuinely large order would have to reach. Each is averaged across the day rather than caught at one instant, because a book at one moment is a photograph of something that changes every second.

The gap between the best price anyone will buy at and the best anyone will sell at is shown beside them. A narrower gap means the two sides sit closer together and trading costs less to cross. Depth and the gap usually move together on Kraken, and when they do not, one side of the book is thinning out on its own.
