RIGHT NOW

Falling, at −$1,346. As of Oct 20, 2026.

What the day shows

At the 2026-10-20 UTC close, the reading was -1,345.8. The previous available reading was -1,373.34. This compares faster and slower averages of the midpoint between each day’s high and low.

How to read that number

Above zero means recent candle midpoints are higher than their longer average. A shrinking positive reading means that gap is narrowing.

Understanding
Bitcoin Awesome Oscillator

Where it stands today

Awesome Oscillator: falling, at −$1,346 as of .

What is Bitcoin Awesome Oscillator?

Bitcoin’s Awesome Oscillator compares the recent midpoint of candle ranges with a longer average of those midpoints. The default subtracts a 34-period simple average from a 5-period simple average. A positive result places the shorter average above the longer one; a negative result places it below. The midpoint is (high + low) ÷ 2 for each candle. It is not the closing price, the average trade price, or the median of all trades. This choice gives the indicator a different view from close-based measures: the shape and location of a candle’s high-low range matter even when its close changes little.

Zero compares two average range centers

Above zero means the latest five candle midpoints average higher than the latest 34. Below zero means they average lower. The most recent five candles also belong to the longer window, so these are overlapping comparisons, not independent samples.

Read bar height and bar movement separately

A positive bar getting smaller means the shorter average is still higher, but the gap has narrowed. A negative bar moving toward zero means the lower shorter average is drawing closer to the longer one. Neither description requires the latest close to have moved in the same direction as the bar.

Keep the dollar scale visible

The indicator is measured in dollars, because it subtracts one average price from another. A reading of 500 means a $500 gap. It is not 500 points on a bounded strength scale. Maketo’s direction label follows the sign, with exactly zero labeled Mixed.

How Awesome Oscillator is calculated

Subtract the 34-candle simple average of (high + low) / 2 from its 5-candle simple average. The page is published on Awesome oscillator, fast 5, slow 34. A period counts candles at the interval you choose, so the same setting covers a different stretch of time on a one-hour chart than on a daily one. How smoothing and missing candles are handled.

A calculation you can follow

These invented window totals show the default 5/34 calculation. For one candle with a $104,000 high and a $98,000 low, the midpoint is ($104,000 + $98,000) ÷ 2 = $101,000. Its close is not used in this step.Suppose the latest five midpoints total $505,000. Their average is $101,000.Suppose the latest 34 midpoints, including those five, total $3,400,000. Their average is $100,000.The oscillator is $101,000 − $100,000 = +$1,000. If the next calculated averages are $101,200 and $100,400, the next bar is +$800. Both averages rose, while their gap shrank.Smaller positive bars can accompany higher average prices. They describe the difference between two paths, not the direction of either path in isolation.

The 5/34 windows

Shortening the faster window gives a few recent candle midpoints more influence. Lengthening the slower window retains earlier price ranges for longer. The fast period must be smaller than the slow period. Equal values would make their difference zero and remove the comparison.

Simple rather than exponential averaging

Every midpoint inside a given window has equal weight. The oldest value drops out completely when the window advances. This differs from an exponential average, which retains a fading contribution from earlier inputs.

Timeframe and history

The default first result needs 34 consecutive candles. On a daily chart that is 34 days; on a 1-hour chart it is 34 hours. Gaps interrupt the required sequence. Increasing the displayed chart range does not change the period or the input history used for calculation.

A long wick can change the midpoint

A brief high far above the rest of a candle can lift its midpoint even if the close returns to its earlier level. The indicator does not know how long price spent near that high. Looking at the candle helps explain a move that a close-only chart may hide.

Departing candles matter

A new bar changes two rolling averages. An unusual midpoint leaving the five-candle window can change the oscillator even when the newest candle is ordinary. The same effect occurs more slowly when an old extreme leaves the 34-candle window.

A pattern name does not establish an outcome

Several rising or falling bars can form a recognizable chart pattern. The numerical facts remain the bars’ sign, size and sequence. Those facts alone do not establish what the next Bitcoin candle must do, and the page does not turn pattern names into recommendations.

Awesome Oscillator compared with MACD

MACD also compares a faster and slower price path, but uses exponential averages of closes and adds a signal line. Comparing the two can reveal the effect of candle midpoints versus closes, as well as simple versus exponential smoothing. Their default periods differ too. Open Bitcoin MACD.

Is the midpoint an average of every traded Bitcoin price?

No. It uses only the highest and lowest prices in the candle, with equal weight. Actual trade quantities and the number of trades do not enter this indicator.

Can I compare a $500 reading across Bitcoin’s whole history?

You can compare the absolute gap, but its relative size changes with Bitcoin’s price level. A $500 gap represents a much larger share of $10,000 than of $100,000.
