Keltner Channels combine a smooth center price with bands based on average true range. Their width responds to candle ranges and gaps rather than the spread of closes alone. Pick a candle interval and the chart recalculates.

What the day shows
At the 2026-10-20 UTC close, the reading was 82,539.9. The previous available reading was 82,497.1. These lines place a moving boundary around the price average using the size of recent daily moves. The selected period is 20 daily candles.
How to read that number
Price near an outer band has travelled further from its smooth center. Compare Keltner with Bollinger Bands to see how two different measures of spread respond.

What is Bitcoin Keltner Channels?
Keltner Channels draw a moving price reference with an upper and lower boundary. The middle is an exponential moving average, which gives newer closes more influence. The distance to each side is a multiple of Average True Range, a measure of recent movement that includes highs, lows and the previous close.Maketo uses the common modern construction: a 20-candle exponential average of closes, a 10-candle average true range, and a width multiplier of 2. Those are three separate settings. They let the central price path change at one speed while the width reacts at another. The resulting lines are dollar reference levels, not guaranteed limits on price.
Read the middle before the edges
Price above the middle is above its weighted closing-price reference. A rising middle shows that reference moving upward. Maketo’s directional label requires both observations to agree, comparing the middle with its value five candles earlier. Price below a rising middle can therefore produce Mixed rather than an immediate Falling reading.
Look at width independently
The full channel width is twice the chosen multiplier times ATR. Both boundaries can move upward while spreading apart, or downward while narrowing. The middle describes the path of closes; width describes the size of recent movements. Neither observation substitutes for the other.
Treat an outside close as a measured position
A close above the upper channel is more than the selected number of average ranges above the middle. That can occur in a sustained advance or a brief jump. The calculation does not decide which explanation is correct, and an outside close does not automatically imply a return inside.
How Keltner Channels is calculated
The default center is a 20-candle EMA. Add and subtract 2 times the 10-period ATR to form the bands. The page is published on Keltner channels, atr period 10, multiplier 2, period 20. A period counts candles at the interval you choose, so the same setting covers a different stretch of time on a one-hour chart than on a daily one. How smoothing and missing candles are handled.
A calculation you can follow
Suppose an illustrative 20-candle exponential average is $100,000 and the 10-candle ATR is $1,500. Use the default multiplier of 2. The distance from the middle to either boundary is 2 × $1,500 = $3,000.The upper channel is $103,000 and the lower channel is $97,000. Full width is $6,000.If ATR later increases to $2,000 while the middle stays $100,000, the boundaries become $104,000 and $96,000.Alternatively, if the middle rises to $102,000 while ATR remains $1,500, the boundaries become $105,000 and $99,000.The first change widens the channel without shifting its centre. The second shifts the whole channel without widening it. Reading only the upper boundary would miss that distinction.
Average period
The default middle uses 20 closes. Its repeated update weights each new close by 2 / 21 after an initial simple-average seed. A shorter period brings the centre closer to recent price changes but makes brief reversals more visible.
Range period
The default ATR uses ten true ranges with Wilder smoothing, independent of the middle-line period. Increasing this setting makes channel width respond more slowly. It does not alter the centre line.
Multiplier and interval
A multiplier of 2 places each boundary two ATR units from the middle. A multiplier of 3 widens that distance by 50%. All periods count selected candles, so the same settings on hourly and daily charts describe different spans of time.
Channel names do not specify every convention
Keltner calculations can differ in the price used for the middle, averaging method, ATR period and multiplier. Matching the label alone is insufficient when checking another chart. This page states the exact construction so the comparison can be reproduced.
Wicks affect width even if the close returns
A wide high-low excursion enters true range even when a candle finishes near its starting price. That movement can keep the channel wide for several later candles. A narrowing channel is therefore partly a record of older large ranges fading from the average.
Keltner Channels compared with Bollinger Bands
Bollinger width depends on how far closes sit from their average. Keltner width depends on trading ranges. They can disagree when candles have large wicks but similar closes. Comparing them explains the kind of movement in the data, rather than producing two independent confirmations. Open Bitcoin Bollinger Bands.
Is the middle always halfway between the outer lines?
Yes. Both boundaries add or subtract the same multiple of ATR. Their arithmetic midpoint equals the exponential average, aside from display rounding.
Does the multiplier create a probability band?
No. Two ATR units do not mean a 95% confidence interval. ATR measures average distance; it does not estimate how likely future prices are.
Why does the channel move before its width changes much?
The centre and width use different inputs and smoothing lengths. Several closes can shift the average while the size of the candle ranges remains similar.
