A dated Bitcoin example
On , Bitcoin VWAP read 76,896.88 on completed daily candles, using Candle-based rolling VWAP · period 20. This is the dated default calculation; a different candle interval answers a different question.
What does this reading describe?
Price above VWAP is above the measured average traded price for that particular window. Changing the reset or anchor changes the question.
How is it calculated?
Candle-based VWAP sums ((high + low + close) / 3) × volume and divides by summed volume. Trade-weighted variants use actual quote volume in the numerator. Rolling defaults to 20 candles; other views use explicit UTC resets or anchors.
Shared calculation conventionsWhat does a worked example look like?
If 2 BTC trade for a combined $200,000 and 1 BTC trades for $110,000, VWAP is $310,000 / 3, or $103,333.33.
What does this mean for you?
Candle-based VWAP is an approximation and is labelled as such. Trade-weighted variants require actual quote volume and never silently switch methods. A weekly or yearly candle cannot reveal the distribution of trades inside a daily session.
How does it compare?
The weighted-average page includes VWMA, which weights candle closes by volume. This page distinguishes typical-price approximations from actual trade-weighted prices.
